Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s Asbestos Work Health and Safety Action Plan 2011-16
In recent news, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has published an asbestos action plan titled Asbestos Work Health and Safety Action Plan 2011-16, outlining moves to reduce exposure to asbestos.
Key aspects of the asbestos action plan include working with industry groups to protect workers at risk from exposure to asbestos and improving the range of WHSQ asbestos risk management information products.
Importantly, the plan outlines how WHSQ will promote compliance with the new workplace asbestos laws, including:
- auditing licensed asbestos removalist businesses
- auditing licensed asbestos assessors
- auditing workplaces for compliance with asbestos registers and management plans
- providing ongoing training to the WHSQ inspectorate
- prosecuting breaches of asbestos law.

One of the first actions from the plan is the publication of a new film Uses and applications of asbestos on the WHSQ website. The film is an extract from Asbestos Awareness – an informative guide to asbestos produced by Parsons Brinckerhoff. It gives general information about where asbestos containing materials are commonly found in domestic and commercial buildings.
